Champions League Prediction (Group Stage): Bayern Munchen vs. Manchester City

Bayern Munich- Shaqiri

Match Date: 17 September 2014 (local time)

Venue: Allianz Arena

The last season’s failure to clinch the Champions League trophy prevented Bayern Munich from achieving the first and historic back-to-back treble. Going through such a frustrating moment, the Bavarians will try to get its revenge this year. But it will not be an easy one for the German powerhouse. Pitted against Manchester City—the only squad, which beat them in the initial stages of the tournament, Bayern will readily need to muscle its way to victory.

The contenders

Bayern Munchen

The Bavarians were impressive in their Champions League campaign last season, except when Real Madrid thrashed them to the core. The 2-legged play-offs witnessed the Bavarians suffer a humiliating and unexpected defeat. The surprise loss can be attributed to high expectations that its head honcho, Pep Guardiola is ought to be highly familiar with the Madridistas and that going against them should be easy. Unfortunately, it was the genius Carlos Ancelotti, who got the upper hand.

Bayern could readily use the said mishap to inspire them in winning another Champions League trophy. But it seems that it will be more difficult since injury issues are slowly crippling the squad. Javi Martinez is sidelined and so is Bastian Schweinsteiger. Thiago Alcantara will be also missing the tournament.

Yet, with Bayern’s purchasing power, the club was able to acquire the signatures of high-profiled defenders to fill the gap left by their injured members. A concrete example of this is Mehdi Benatia of Roma and just recently, Real Madrid’s very own, Xabi Alonso. The biggest question that the squad must answer is how they can possibly maximize the potential of their new acquisitions.

Manchester City

The Premier League defending champion is also a familiar face in the tournament. They were also impressive last season. But they eventually fell out during the Round of 16. Such elimination can be perceived as a double-edged sword for it paved way for the Chilean tactician, Manuel Pellegrini to focus on the squad’s Premier League campaign. Indeed, they won the trophy, which was their second silverware after clinching the League Cup. Yet, just like Bayern, it could have been a treble in the making had they advanced into the latter stage of the European competition.

Currently, the squad’s title defence is under fire as they experienced its first loss under the hands of Stoke. City’s winning possibilities is further lessened with Stevan Jovetic’s injury.

Possible head turners

Xabi Alonso was excellent in form and performance when he was with Real Madrid and many are hoping to see a similar, if not a much better display of skills when he plays for the online betting favorite, Bayern Munich.
