Liverpool
After seizing all three points from Ludogoretz last month, Liverpool are down to ground zero following a goalless defeat from Basel in their second appearance at the UEFA Champions League Group round. The English side underwent a hard time trouncing their Swiss opponents, although their performance in the first half was generally strong. In the second period, however, some things just went a little off and not long before the first hour ended, Basel are already ahead of the tally with a powerful goals scored by Marco Streller. The loss counts as Liverpoolâs second non-consecutive defeat in six matches from all competitions.
Real Madrid
The current group leaders, Real Madrid have a produced landslide victories in their first two appearances at the UEFA top-tier tournamentâs Group round. A successful penalty by Cristiano Ronaldo and a decisive goal from Karim Benzema proved fatal to the Champions League hopes of their Bulgarian opponents, Ludogorets Hazgrad. However, the latter were not necessarily unimpressive during the brawl. In fact, they scored first through Marcelinhoâs opener, which served as an early threat to their Spanish rivals. In addition, keeper Stoyanov successfully saved Ronaldoâs first penalty. Regardless, Madrid were the clear dominant team for the most part of the game and their win was a well-deserved reward. They have been unbeaten in their past six matches.
