Serie A Club Review: Sampdoria

UC Sampdoria v US Sassuolo Calcio - Serie A

Sampdoria finished as the 12th best squad in Italy’s top-flight league and two (2) notches higher than what it accomplished during the 2012/2013 season. Although, many are expecting a much better performance, the finale was nonetheless, acceptable, considering what it has to go through in the recently concluded season.

Sampdoria’s initial matches resulted in disappointing losses, low morale and eventually, the sacking of Delio Rossi. Due to this, the squad has to start from scratch under the tutelage of Sinisa Mihajlovic.

The transition was not a bed of roses due to adjustment issues. Yet, all their efforts soon paid off as the squad started gaining more wins. Fueled by a renewed confidence, Sampdoria escaped the threatening fangs of relegation and retained its Serie A status.

Match to remember

After a 3-0 thrashing from Atalanta, Mihajlovic immediately criticized his players, stating that they have “no balls.” Challenged by the manager’s comment, Sampdoria featured at home via destroying Verona with five (5) massive goals.

Match to forget

Although Sampdoria impressed during the match against Verona, all their laurels were stripped off when they met Napoli in their second to the last match. The latter thrashed them with 5 goals. Thankfully, they were able to respond with two (2) goals and prevented a clean sheet.

The scene-stealers

Shkodran Mustafi has only scored a single goal throughout the season. However, it cannot be denied that it was through his impenetrable defence that helped the squad evade a saddening relegation.

Latest Additions

Eager to bolster up their defence, Sampdoria is one of the clubs showing strong interest in Hugo Campagnaro. Campagnaro is from the online betting favorite, Inter Milan.
