Match Date: 28 December 2013 (local)

Match Venue: Cardiff City Stadium

Cardiff City

Cardiff City lost three points and conceded three goals when they met Liverpool at the latter’s home court a week ago. As if the upset was not yet a full-blown embarrassment, The Bluebirds repeated history: they again let go of three goals and succumbed to their opponents after Southampton delivered an away clean sheet over Cardiff on Boxing Day. This pinned Malky Mackay’s men to stay in the table’s bottom half, just one point clear of relegation.

Perhaps it was due to an internal conflict between Mackay and club owner Vincent Tan that Cardiff had compromised their match against The Saints, though the manager refuses to consider this as an excuse. Mackay’s position in the club is in jeopardy, especially because of the back-to-back defeats his men have incurred in their past few matches. Whatever it is that is happening outside the turf, the club should remain focused on their fixtures if they do not want the entire club to fall apart.

Their much-awaited victory has finally knocked on their door when Sunderland successfully thumped Everton in their outing to Goodison Park. A 25th-minute penalty from on-loan Swansea midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng drove the Black Cats to what was their first victory in seven top-flight fixtures. Three points were obtained from the brawl, and though it was a substantial amount, it was not enough to fully free the side from the relegation zone.

The spot-kick was given after Leon Osman failed to manage a volley from Tim Howard. Ki took possession of the ball and darted it into the box, where he hit the ground when attacked by Howard, who was shown a straight red card. Everton via Ross Barkley piled on the pressure after the break but could not find an opportunity to level the scoring, thanks to Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone who pulled off several remarkable saves.

Football betting tip: Basing on their last matches, Sunderland apparently exude the upper hand. However, by overall measures, Cardiff City seem to be the dominant side. In this match, where both squads flaunt some kind of unpredictability, a draw should be expected.
