Lazio Defeats Roma - Italian Cup

Roma can kiss its bid to win 10 Coppa Italia titles—a first in history—goodbye.

Lazio blasted its bitter rival AS Roma 1-0 last May 26 for a spot in the Europa League. While the Giallorossi were the favorites to make it to the aforementioned league, the Biancocelesti won five of six previous finals. Roma finished the Serie A season at sixth, while Lazio placed seventh.

This is the sixth time that Lazio took the Italian Cup.

Senad Lulic made the winning shot at the 70th minute mark after Roma’s Bogdan Lobont couldn’t stop a cross courtesy of midfielder Antonio Candreva.

It was a tight and tense match, what with midfielder Cristian Ledesma getting booked early for fouling on Marquinho, and concerns about fans turning violent, as they usually do before Serie A matches.

Klose’s strong close range header 10 minutes before the break in the first half got saved by Lobont. During the second half, the tables were turned as Roma thought to tip the odds to their favor with Francesco Totti’s free kick, only to be frustrated by Lazio’s Federico Marchetti.

This defeat has fueled rumors that the Giallorossi manager Andrea Andreazzoli could be replaced by AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri. The rumors have yet to be confirmed.
