Premier League Preview: Stoke City vs. Crystal Palace

Stoke vs Crystal

Stoke vs Crystal

Both Stoke City (The Potters) and Crystal Palace (Eagles) started their new Premier League season campaign with below-par maneuvers, despite the hot buzz from sports betting sites. Stoke were beaten by Liverpool 0-1 in an otherwise predictable match at the Anfield stadium. Newly promoted Crystal Palace, meanwhile, underwent defeat from Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 in spite of having the home advantage. On August 24 at the Britannia Stadium, the sides will meet up for their second appearance in the tournament. This should serve as their chance to boost their form and continue their streak with at least a draw.

Players in focus

The Potters have two members missing from the squad: Wilson Palacios was no-show in the Liverpool fixture due to illness and Brek Shea also did the same but due to knee injury. This leaves the likes of Jermaine Pennant and Michael Kingtly in the shortlist for manager Mark Hughes’s picks.

Eagles have Dwight Gayle, Marouane Chamakh, and Kevin Phillips strive for a forward’s opening ignition, though Phillips will most probably serve as an impact substitute in the most part. Coach Ian Holloway has to reshuffle his pack in order to make room for “new” breakthrough players and experiment on new tactics to reenergize the ensemble.

The home and away factors

Stoke City do not fare really well when playing as home. This can be seen in their last five home matches where they only managed to win once (against Norwich City 1-0) and made a draw once as well (with West Bromwich 0-0). The rest of the tourneys were aching defeats (against Tottenham 1-2, Manchester United 0-2, and Aston Villa 1-3). Crystal Palace, in comparison, are relatively more sprightly as away players. Of their five most recent away battles, they were able to win three times (against Waterford United 4-0, Dagenham & Redbridge 2-1, and Watford 1-0). The remaining two were setbacks (both from Crawley Town 0-3, 0-3).

Prediction: Stoke City will win this match in a very slim difference, although a draw is also very likely to happen.
